Krishna (T-19) — The Mother Who Defied the Odds

Machali’s Heir and a Motherhood Record-Setter

Krishna, bearing the registry number T-19, emerged from Machali’s lineage to write her own extraordinary chapter in Ranthambore’s history. While her mother gained fame through fierceness and longevity, Krishna’s legacy centres on a different kind of achievement — she successfully raised five cubs born in a single litter, an event that wildlife biologists describe as exceedingly rare among Bengal tigers in the wild.

The Quintuplet Challenge

Tigers typically give birth to two or three cubs per litter. When Krishna delivered five healthy cubs in 2015, the event drew immediate attention from the research community. Sustaining five growing cubs through infancy requires a near-daily kill rate — an immense caloric demand that pushes even the most skilled hunter to her limits.

Yet Krishna managed it. Park monitoring data showed her hunting frequency nearly doubled during the critical first year, with kills recorded across a wide range of prey species including sambar, chital, and nilgai. All five cubs — among them the now-famous Arrowhead (T-84), Riddhi (T-124), and Sidhi (T-125) — survived to the sub-adult stage and eventually dispersed into their own ranges.

Territorial Intelligence

Krishna demonstrated a sophisticated approach to territory management. Rather than defending a single fixed area, she rotated her family unit across a broad range spanning portions of Zones 3, 4, and the buffer areas between them. This rotational strategy ensured that prey populations in any one sector were not depleted, allowing her to hunt sustainably over extended periods.

A Living Monument

Krishna’s last confirmed sightings date to approximately 2020. Whether she retreated into an inaccessible corner of the reserve or succumbed to old age remains unconfirmed. What is beyond question, however, is her genetic impact: her offspring now occupy prime territories across the park, and her granddaughters are already producing cubs of their own.

“Every cub Krishna raised to independence was a conservation victory in its own right. That she managed it five times over in a single generation places her among the most consequential mothers in the history of Indian wildlife.”
