Ranthambore National Park

A comprehensive guide to one of India’s most iconic wildlife sanctuaries — where centuries-old heritage blends with untouched wilderness.

A Legacy of Conservation & Heritage

Ranthambore National Park, spread across 1,334 sq. km in the Sawai Madhopur district of Rajasthan, is among India’s largest and most celebrated national parks. Originally the hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Jaipur, it was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1955 and upgraded to a national park in 1980.

The park is part of India’s prestigious Project Tiger initiative and is recognized globally for its successful tiger conservation programs. Its unique landscape — a dramatic blend of dry deciduous forests, ancient ruins, and shimmering lakes — makes it one of the few places where tigers roam freely amidst historical monuments.

Ranthambore Fort

Perched on a rocky hilltop at 700 feet, this 10th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site dominates the park’s skyline. Built by the Chauhan Rajputs, the fort has witnessed battles between the Mughals and Rajputs and now serves as a spectacular backdrop for wildlife photography.

Scenic Lakes & Water Bodies

The park is dotted with beautiful lakes — Padam Talao (famous for its lotus cover), Raj Bagh Talao, Malik Talao, and Mansarovar. These water bodies attract a rich variety of wildlife, making them prime tiger-sighting spots, especially in summer.

Flora & Vegetation

Ranthambore features dry deciduous forests dominated by Dhok trees (Anogeissus pendula), along with Banyan, Ber, Neem, and sprawling grasslands. The landscape shifts from dense thickets to open plateaus, creating diverse microhabitats that support a wide range of species.

Diverse Fauna

Beyond tigers, the park is home to Indian Leopards, Sloth Bears, Striped Hyenas, Sambhar Deer, Chital, Nilgai, Indian Gazelle (Chinkara), Wild Boar, Langur monkeys, and Mugger Crocodiles. The rich prey base supports one of India’s highest tiger densities.

Birdwatcher's Paradise

Over 320 species of birds have been recorded, including the Crested Serpent Eagle, Painted Stork, Indian Grey Hornbill, White-breasted Kingfisher, Bonelli’s Eagle, and various species of owls. Winter months bring migratory species from Central Asia and Europe.

How to Reach

The nearest railway station is Sawai Madhopur Junction (11 km), well connected to Delhi, Jaipur, and Mumbai. The nearest airport is Jaipur International Airport (180 km). By road, the park is accessible from Jaipur (180 km), Delhi (400 km), and Agra (280 km).

Tiger Diaries

Tiger Stories from the Jungle

Ranthambore Safari

Krishna (T-19) made conservation history by raising five cubs from one litter to independence — an extraordinarily rare achievement among wild Bengal tigers. Her offspring, including Arrowhead, now dominate multiple zones across Ranthambore.

Sultan (T-72) — The Colossus of Zone 5

Weighing over 250 kg, Sultan (T-72) is the dominant male of Ranthambore's Zone 5. His battle-scarred frame and prolific breeding record make him one of the most important genetic contributors in the park's history.

Noor (T-39) — Ranthambore’s Gentle Powerhouse

Known as Ranthambore's most reliable sighting, Noor (T-39) combines lethal hunting skill with a composed demeanour around safari vehicles. Her Zone 2 territory is the go-to recommendation for visitors seeking a guaranteed tiger encounter.

Ranthambore Tiger machli

Catalogued as T-16, Machali spent nineteen years ruling Ranthambore's core zones, raising eleven cubs, and drawing worldwide attention to Indian tiger conservation. Her legacy lives on through descendants who still roam the park.
